MARSHALLS CREEK - John Komatsoulis of Smithfield Township is trying to make a difference while
bringing awareness to the area of a devastating disease.

Parkinson's disease affects nearly 5 million people worldwide. This chronic disease has no known cure, and more than 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone in the U.S., according to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

"My grandfather passed away a few years ago due to Parkinson's disease," said Komatsoulis. "We represent Team Fox. Our consulting firm is Learn About Us. We are trying to bring awareness to Parkinson's research."

Team Fox is a group that supports The Michael J. Fox Foundation to raise money and awareness of the disease. Team Fox set up a booth at the Marshalls Creek flea market Saturday. The Michael J. Fox Foundation, named for the TV and film actor suffering from the disease, is the largest nonprofit funding source of Parkinson's disease research worldwide.

"Our goal today is $5,000," Komatsoulis said. "We started off well, so we hope to continue that pace.

"We picked the Marshalls Creek flea market because we know that there is a lot of traffic going through here, and we didn't want to spend a lot of money on a venue, so we can give more to the charity."

With Subway and Hershey's as sponsors, the booth stood out for those shopping for a bargain. Raffles throughout the day enticed people to stop by and donate a few dollars in the hopes of winning a platter from Subway and other prizes.

"This is our first major event," Komatsoulis said. "We are going to be doing other events in the near future, such as a cocktail mixer and golf tournament."

Current Parkinson's treatments temporarily mask symptoms while the disease progresses. While the average onset occurs around age 60, it is estimated that 5 to 10 percent of people with the disease are 40 and under.
